Inspired by a Robin's red breast, this blended top was designed by HipStrings and custom milled according to our specifications. It features 37.5% Shetland wool, 37.5% Blue Faced Leicester wool, 12.5% Tussah Silk and 12.5% Flax.
The Shetland in this blend is 29-31 micron and about a 3.5 inch staple length. Blue Faced Leicester is the finest of the long wools, ranging about 23-25 microns. Although many spinners may be intimidated by spinning flax, fearing it will be difficult to draft and "crunchy" in the final yarn, the small amount of flax plus Tussah Silk in many of our custom blends actually makes it easier to draft, and adds strength and drape to the resulting yarn. This fiber blend is very versatile - suitable for drapey shawls and stoles as well as hardwearing woven textiles or comfy outerwear.
Show in the listing photo is two different put ups of four ounces - this fiber is sold as a four ounce portion. On the left is a nest (most online orders are shipped as a nest in a plastic reclosable bag); on the right is a chain. A one ounce handspun skein is show below the fiber. Sample yarn is a 2 ply - how this fiber spins up will vary greatly depending on drafting method, thickness of single and other such factors.
Care: Hand wash in tepid water (we recommend Unicorn Fibre Wash), lay flat to dry. This fiber will felt!
Colors may vary according to monitors, but all effort has been taken to accurately depict the colors of the fiber.
